Moving to Latin America? Your U.S. health plan probably won't follow you.

Most American expats find out the hard way — at a doctor's office in Medellín or Mexico City, learning their U.S. plan doesn't cover them.

We're here to help you avoid that moment.

ZenMed Advisors is a bilingual, independent insurance agency, and we're expanding to serve U.S. expats living in Latin America — especially Colombia. We help you understand your international coverage options before you go, in English or Spanish, with the same calm, no-pressure guidance we bring to every client.

The reality nobody explains before you move

Most U.S. health plans do not cover you outside the United States — except in very specific emergencies, for short periods, and with many exclusions.

This includes:

  • ACA (Marketplace) plans

  • Original Medicare (Parts A and B)

  • Most Medicare Advantage plans

  • Many employer-sponsored plans

Move without solving this first, and you're effectively uninsured the day you land. The good news: you have real options — and they're more affordable than most people expect.

Which expat are you? 4 common scenarios

1. Temporary move (under 6 months). International traveler's or short-term expat insurance — covers emergencies and basic care, supplements your U.S. plan rather than replacing it.

2. Indefinite or permanent move (not yet on Medicare). A full international health insurance plan for expats — coverage in your destination country and often globally, with some plans keeping U.S. access for visits.

3. Retired or on Medicare. This is where it gets complicated — Medicare does not cover you abroad. You'll weigh a local plan in your destination, an international expat plan, or keeping Medicare only for U.S. emergencies. (Whatever you do — don't cancel Medicare without understanding the lifetime penalties.)

4. Residency or dual citizenship. Access to the local public system plus a complementary private plan — often the most affordable route if you qualify.

Not sure which one you are? Our free guide walks through all four — and when we open, we'll help you choose.
